Soup & The Spirit--Second Installment

Between arriving at mid-semester and having spring break the following week, we finally got to start our class. We teach "Teachings of the Living Prophets" on Tuesday afternoons. Our first class had 6 attendees, and we anticipate that those numbers will grow. This week, we will also be substitute teaching for a few class sessions as the director will be away to meetings for a few days. We also keep the institute open in the afternoons for any who wish to come and use the available resources. Additionally, we participate with 2 YSA wards here in Anchorage.

Currently, the institute has 5 classes, Teachings of The Book of Mormon, Book of Mormon (Pathways), Building a Successful Marriage, Doctrine & Covenants, and our class. All told, total class participation has been about 55 to 65 students. Many of the young adults are away to colleges in other states and then there will be quite a few summer workers who come for the tourism season. Consequently, we anticipate that our numbers will grow in the summer months.

On Friday nights, we alternate two activities called "Soup & The Spirit" and "Waffle Night". Somehow those two names got joined together into "SASWAFEN". And it starts promptly at 7:03 pm! We have food, a spiritual message, fun and games, and often, a service activity. We have already met and associated with many outstanding young adults who participate in the Wards and in our classes and activities.

Missionary activity is very good as there have been a number of recent converts of the young adult variety. This is Elder Bailey and Elder Carroll; they are assigned to the Cook Inlet YSA Ward.
